The center examined studies on hyperbaric oxygen therapy—a treatment in which patients inhale 100 percent oxygen while inside a special chamber that is pressurized to greater than 1 atmosphere (atm). Oxygen has weight and the air we breathe is made up of about 21% oxygen. One atm is the pressure caused by the air’s weight (the atmosphere) at sea level. If the oxygen content of the air rises, it weighs more and exerts more pressure. Most hyperbaric oxygen chambers have a pressure from 1 to 3 atm because the amount of oxygen in the chamber is greater than in the air we breathe.
The extra oxygen in the air has the potential to help heal tissues, like skin damaged by wounds or burns. For stroke, the idea is that increased oxygen in the body can help heal the damaged brain tissue.
