Poor blood flow with a consequential lack of adequate oxygenation is the cause of many memory problems. Mini-strokes can and often do cause memory loss. These strokes may occur without anyone realizing that they have occurred or are occurring. If the memory goes bad suddenly, and especially if confusion is also present, then there is a reasonable chance a stroke has occurred. If this has happened to you or your spouse, then it is important to have an MRI and MRA of the brain and its blood vessels. If these tests show either a stroke or narrowing of the blood vessels, then at least part of your problem is due to lack of OXYGEN to the brain.

Many patients with memory loss are not differentially diagnosed, nor treated correctly. If your memory has been getting worse, you will probably go see your doctor. But what do you do if the doctor tells you that “it’s normal aging” and to “not worry”? Or she gives you a medication or herb to take that does not seem to make any difference? You know that you have a problem but no one seems to be able to figure out what to do to help you. Next you may see a specialist and at that point you may be given a different medication. Perhaps this drug also does not stop the progressive decline of your memory, not to mention all the side effects you could have from the drug. And perhaps they do not even know why your memory is failing. Maybe they throw a name at it, but that only makes it more frightening.
The terms senility and Alzheimers get thrown around so easily nowadays, everyone from your neighbor to your gardener is probably diagnosing you.

Keep in mind: forgetting where you put your car keys is not an indication of Alzheimers. Forgetting what color your car is, or how you got to the grocery store is a valid cause for concern.
Sometimes memory problems are caused by vascular disease. A decrease in blood flow, and consequential decrease in available oxygen, can affect your memory. If you do not know that your doctor has done a thorough differential diagnosis, be sure to ask her if she checked your Blood Fibrinogen level and also if she can do a Brain MRI to see if perhaps you had a mini-stroke, or are vascular-compromised. If the fibrinogen is high or the MRI shows evidence that you have had a stroke then you may be fairly sure that you probably have some degree of brain vascular disease that is causing or contributing to your memory problems.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and Cerebral Palsy

Hyperbaric Oxygen Chambers-Autism

The term “cerebral palsy” is not a specific diagnosis, but is now generally applied to children who experience some forms of brain trauma either at the time of birth or shortly before. Typically, these children manifest some degree of cognitive impairment as well as physical impairment, often with weakness and spasticity of arms and legs. Typically treatment for children with cerebral palsy has been directed at the physical manifestations of the underlying problem. Most efforts are directed at increasing the ranges of motion, reducing spasticity, and increasing strength, along with specific therapies designed to enhance communication skills and academic performance.
Evidence from other countries is now providing strong support for the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy to improve the underlying problem in children with cerebral palsy. Hyperbaric oxygen actually targets the abnormalities of brain function. This offers an exciting new approach for treatment.

Studies show that the effectiveness of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in children with cerebral palsy is linked to its enhancing the function of previously damaged neurons (brain/nerve cells). These neurons have been called “idling neurons” in that while they are still alive, they have been damaged to the extent that their function is compromised. Hyperbaric oxygen facilitates the restoration of these damaged neurons which improves brain function and the nervous system. The use of Hyperbaric oxygen to help children with cerebral palsy is becoming more widespread in the United States.

Depending on the treatment depth, the patient will leave the chamber saturated with up to twenty times normal oxygen levels.
HBOT triggers many positive physiological events:

New tissue striving to fill the dead tissue wound space requires a 24 times oxidative burst. This intense competition for oxygen can cause inflammation and swelling. HBOT provides this additional oxygen.

HBOT sessions prior to surgery will eliminate the reperfusion phenomenon, reducing the chance of scar tissue forming. It also reduces inflamation and swelling.

Hypoxia in normally perfused tissue can unexpectedly occur post-surgically due to an inflammatory response and edema. HBOT corrects hypoxia and dramatically reduces inflammation and swelling.

HBOT increases fibroblast replication and collagen production. It also raises the RNA/DNA ratio in the tissues, indicating increased formation of rough endoplasmic reticulum of cells of the wounded area.

From Beverly Hills to New York City, more and more cosmetic surgeons are adding Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy to their protocol, routinely treating their patients before and after cosmetic surgery, sometimes providing the hyperbaric chamber right in their office.

Hyperbaric oxygen can:
Help resolve unexpected complications post-surgery.
Dramatically reduce post-surgical bruising, swelling, and inflammation.
Speed up healing and recovery time from elective surgery.

Important effects of post-surgical hyperbaric oxygen for your patients would be the stimulation of leukocyte microbial killing, the enhancement of fibroblast replication, and increased collagen formation and neovascularization of ischemic tissue.

Hyperbaric oxygen is a safe way to alter the inflammatory process to help wound healing. It cuts down pain and swelling, inflammation in tissues, and it has an anti-bacterial effect. Patients who had this therapy in conjunction with their cosmetic surgery seem to have a shorter recuperation period. And scars have been shown to heal better with hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Cosmetic surgeons are recommending hyperbaric oxygen particularly for patients who have problems with healing. They may have been smokers, overweight, they may be immunity suppressed, or their incisions may have become infected, etc.

The bruising goes away faster, swelling decreases faster, and the patients actually feel better overall. HBOT is known to be exceedingly effective for laser peels. After a laser peel, lingering redness is a problem for many patients. The chamber gets rid of the red more quickly. For liposuction, the chamber helps the swelling decrease much faster, which results in less post-operative discomfort.
Normally, only red blood cells are fully saturated with oxygen molecules and the body consumes energy sending it to demanding cells.

However, inside the hyperbaric oxygen chamber, oxygen obeys Henrys Universal Gas Law and so the oxygen becomes soluble using passive diffusion to saturate the plasma and cerebrospinal fluid.

“I was diagnosed with Bulbar ALS in Dec. 2005. My speech was leaving me. I started Tibetan herbs because a friend had reversed speech problems due to taking them. I still take the herbs but my speech has become impossible to understand. I have a feeding tube now and am gaining weight-yippee! A year ago I started hyperbaric oxygen therapy with. I have not had the tiredness that most ALS patients seem to deal with. I am playing golf, doing yoga and pilates and jog/walking 5k races..I volunteer for Hospice.,Lifehouse and am a National official for USA Track and Field covering the meets at Cal and Stanford and the NCAA Nationals. .I credit this to my oxygen treatments- I started at 5 times a week and now take it 4 times a week…It is enjoyable for me as I can meditate ,read or sleep in the chamber.I am happy doing this as it cannot hurt me and only help me.!!

Generally, if you are allowed to fly in an airplane, then you most likely can use the hyperbaric chamber!

By now you have decided that you can benefit from use of a hyperbaric chamber and that you are a good candidate for hyperbaric therapy. You now want to know what to expect during a session.
You should come in loose, warm, comfortable, and cozy clothing. I would not recommend tight constricting clothing. You may bring books, CD player with headphones, or portable DVD player with headphones. You may also bring a favorite lap blanket since it can be a bit cool. Children can bring quiet toys.

When you arrive for your session, you will see the deflated chamber which appears smaller than the inflated chamber. However, within one or two minutes, the chamber is completely inflated. You will be able to sit upright or lie supine comfortably.

The main window is enormous and three other windows are strategically placed so that you never feel enclosed. Yet you also maintain privacy.

Also, you are in complete control since you can depressurize the chamber and get out on your own if needed.

During pressurization you are encouraged to equalize pressure in your ears by yawning, swallowing, turning your head from side-to-side, or massaging the area below the ears and behind the jaw. You can also close your mouth and pinch your nose, and then blow outward.
Each session lasts about 60 minutes. You will not feel the higher air pressure at all. You may actually feel much lighter.

I have been so totally impressed with my improvement after just a few treatments that I decided to purchase the same hyperbaric chamber for my home-based health practice!

This chamber is absolutely HUGE!
A parent may accompany their child into the chamber and both can comfortably receive a treatment simultaneously!
I am prone to claustrophobia, but experienced absolutely none in this chamber. I can even reach my arms straight out in front of me while supine and can even sit up while in the chamber.
Many other physicians successfully use this same chamber in their practice.

This chamber is also FDA-approved for home use. You will appreciate your treatments in our warm and friendly home environment rather than a cold and impersonal medical center.
Most non-hospitalized individuals can easily and effectively use this hyperbaric chamber.
However, you should not use hyperbaric oxygen therapy if you have oxygen-dependent emphysema (COPD) since the extra oxygen can suppress your respiratory drive. In addition, you should not use the chamber if you currently have a pneumothorax or a history of spontaneous pneumothorax.
Certain medications, such as doxorubicin, bleomycin, cis-platinum, disulfiram, and mafenide acetate, should not be used while you are receiving hyperbaric treatments.
At this time, I recommend avoidance of hyperbaric therapy if you are pregnant since not enough research has been performed yet. We would need to be cautious if you have Eustachian tube dysfunction and have an upper respiratory infection with difficulty equalizing ear pressure.
Nicotine causes constriction of blood flow and diminishes the effectiveness of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Therefore, you should discontinue the use of all nicotine products.

A hyperbaric oxygen chamber is a safe and effective way to deliver more oxygen to your cells with higher pressure so that your body can better heal itself and maintain health.

A mild hyperbaric chamber compresses filtered ambient air from 1 atm to 1.3 atm which is the equivalent to about 11 feet below sea level. This 30% pressure increase allows for more oxygen to be dissolved into the water throughout your entire body according to Henrys Law of Physics. Your cells are then more easily able to access this dissolved oxygen.

Hyperbaric therapy helps to create the optimal terrain within your body so that your body can perform essential cell processes efficiently.
Healthy cells make a healthy body!

Hyperbaric therapy itself is not new. The first chamber was developed in 1662. Hyperbaric chambers have been used successfully in a multitude of medical conditions since 1834. Most every doctor knows that hyperbaric oxygen therapy works!

However, most chambers are only found in hospitals or medical centers and are only used for a few approved life-threatening conditions. In addition, treatment in these chambers is extremely expensive from $500 to $2500 per each session. Usually, medical insurance does not even pay for these treatments either.

Now, advanced technology has provided FDA-approved mild hyperbaric chambers for use at home or in other facilities. The benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy are now available to many more people with various conditions for significantly lower cost.
This is fantastic news!

Now, anyone who desires optimal health and slower aging can benefit from hyperbaric therapy. In addition, people who live and work in the preceding high risk environments, and athletes who strive for peak performance and rapid recovery can also be helped with a hyperbaric chamber.

Autism is a mysterious disease-condition-behaviour disorder which causes a complex neurological disorder that typically occurs within the first 3 years of life, that results in developmental disabilities. Children will seemingly develop normally until 18 -24 months at which time an alarming regression in their development occurs and they may stop speaking and begin to lose interest in their surroundings and interactions with other people. Autism occurs two to four times more frequently in boys than in girls.

There are many theories as to the cause of Autism such as abnormal cerebral blood flow to areas of the brain, high fevers, birth trauma, brain injury, infections, reactions to vaccines (some reports implicate MMR) or lack of oxygen before, during or after delivery. Other theories suggest mineral deficiencies such as calcium, iron and zinc either in utero or after birth or fat and protein deficiencies.

The use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) for autism has been used in many countries worldwide. The results are varied and the individual reports from families and health professionals are encouraging. There are many testimonies on the net from families who have taken HBOT for their autistic child with varied results, mostly very encouraging.

HBOT increases the oxygen tissue concentration which increases cerebral blood flow to an area thus enabling the body to restore brain tissue metabolism of oxygen and nutrients, helping restoration of any areas which are suffering from hypoxia. New blood and oxygen begin to stimulate an area, especially one that has viable, recoverable brain cells that are “idling neurons” not knowing what to do instead of function normally.
