HBOT Hyper-baric oxygen therapy or Hyperbaric Medicine is the clinical use of oxygen at a pressure higher than the atmoshperic pressure. In the past, therapy was often done in large industrial chambers, but the hyperbaric chamber options today are much friendlier, especially for children. HBOT chambers were originally built to treat decompression disorders in divers but research has shown clinical success in treating disorders including cerebral palsy, FAS and stroke. Today HBOT is becoming a popular option for the treatment of autism.

Summary: Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has been used with clinical success in several cerebral hypoperfusion syndromes. HBOT can compensate for decreased blood flow by increasing the oxygen content of plasma and body tissues and can even normalize oxygen levels in ischemic tissue. Furthermore, animal studies have shown that HBOT has significant anti-inflammatory effects and reduces oxidative stress.
Furthermore, recent evidence demonstrates that HBOT mobilizes stem cells from human bone marrow, which may aid recovery in neurodegenerative diseases. In this study, it is hypothesized that HBOT will improve symptoms in autistic individuals.
