Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, already used for the treatment of the bends, carbon monoxide poisoning and a spread of other conditions, may lead the way on to improvement in autistic patients, according to a study by surgeon Daniel Rossignol and made public in the Brit Medical Book .
“These findings confirm what we are seeing in clinical practice — that many children with autism could benefit with the utilization of this treatment,” Rossignol recounted.
Hyperbaric oxygen care involves having a patient breathe oxygen pressurised to a level larger than atmospheric pressure. While anecdotal proof has led many doctors to start experimenting with the care as a treatment for autism, the present study is the 1st huge scale, double-blind controlled medical trial into its efficacy.
