How Chelation Aids Cardiovascular Health

Chelation reduces calcium plaques on arterial walls. These atherosclerotic plaques are not limited to arteries nearest the heart. On the contrary, they are widespread and can affect blood flow (oxygen delivery) to every cell, tissue, gland, organ, and system being served by the over 75,000 miles of blood vessels in your body. Chelation reaches every blood vessel in the body, from the largest artery to the tiniest capillary and arteriole, most of which are far too small or too deep within the brain or other organ to be safely reached in surgery.

Other scientifically documented benefits of intravenous EDTA chelation therapy for the cardiovascular system include:

• Stabilization of arterial intracellular membranes
• Maintenance of the electrical charge of platelets in the blood, reducing blood clumping (aggregation) and preventing blood clots.
• Marked improvement in nearly 100% of 2,870 studied patients with peripheral vascular disease
• Normalization of half of treated cardiac arrhythmias
• Reductions of cerebrovascular occlusion
• Improved cognitive function in people with memory and concentration deficits and improved visual acuity (when problems are caused by arterial blockage)
• Improved myocarditis due to lead poisoning.
• Reduction of blood fat levels and improved capillary blood flow.
• Increased peripheral blood flow to the extremities.
• Improved compliance of vascular tissues; decalcification of elastic tissues resulting in improved elasticity and resilience.
• Improved red blood cell membrane flexibility and permeability to potassium
• Decreased blood pressure levels, as a result of excretion of cadmium from renal tissues, diminished peripheral resistance, improved blood vessel resilience and pliability, decreased vascular spasm, and improved magnesium uptake.

Dedicated Physician Shut Down, Medical Successes Ignored

David A. Steenblock, M.S., D.O., was the first physician to establish a comprehensive stroke and brain injury rehabilitation facility using HBO therapy and other modalities, with the goal being to repair the damaged brain from stroke and trauma. Practicing out of the Health Restoration Medical Center in Mission Viejo, CA, the reward for his dedication has been that he has been hounded, persecuted, his records confiscated, and family members threatened as the FDA tried to keep him from using the very therapy Charity Hospital in New Orleans now publicly utilizes on national television!

Until Dr. Steenblock’s remarkable work no one has paid attention to or studied the repair of the damaged brain. Limbs and motor skills were given extensive therapy, but establishment medicine has contemptuously maintained the position that there was no reversing damage to the brain. Despite their contentions, Doctor Steenblock’s success with his patients and his thriving practice demonstrated that brain damage can be reversed, even after years of time.

He told me about one particularly profound case. Dorothy Conforti had had a massive stroke. Her CAT scan showed extensive brain damage. One side of her body was completely paralyzed and she had no control over her bodily fluids or bowels. She could barely see and was unable to communicate. She couldn’t feed herself, and she was close to death. Dr. Steenblock treated her in his hyperbaric oxygen chamber for one hour every four hours and three hours of chelation, around the clock. A follow up CAT scan showed the therapy successfully restored 85 percent of the damage to her brain. Today, she is back to normal.

What kind of scientific experiment or study is needed to validate (or invalidate) chelation therapy?

The best way to study chelation therapy would be to conduct a two-part study.

• Step one would be a study that proves EDTA can remove calcium from arterial plaque (and that the plaque. dissolves). The study should also show that this occurs without dangerous side effects.
• Step two would be properly controlled clinical trials in a large population. This would only be done if EDTA had been proven successful in reducing arterial plaque without dangerous side effects.
What’s a properly controlled clinical trial?
A properly controlled clinical trial meets these criteria:
• The patients or subjects receiving the treatment formally agree to participate, based upon reliable information given to them by the scientists conducting the trial. The patients would be told of the known risks involved and the possible (but unproven) benefits. Participants would have to give their “”informed consent”” to participate.
• The treatments are free to the patients or subjects.
• The trial is closely monitored and reviewed by 1) knowledgeable scientists who aren’t involved in the trial, 2) representatives of the lay community, 3) representatives of the religious community, 4) statisticians and 5) other interested persons.

• The trial is “”double blind.”” This means that neither the patient nor the physician giving the treatment knows whether the patient is getting EDTA or a neutral control substance (placebo). Other precautions to ensure objectivity are 1) that the physician giving the treatment can’t be the person who records the results and 2) the person observing the results can’t know which substance a person under observation received.
Any study that doesn’t follow this methodology will produce results open to question because the process lacks scientific safeguards. Accordingly, the results wouldn’t be scientifically valid. To the knowledge of the American Heart Association, no study of chelation therapy that rigorously follows accepted scientific methodology has ever been completed.

Patty is in critical condition as the paramedics wheel her into the emergency room. Relatives had pulled her out of her running car in a closed garage and her doctors fear the worst. She is in a coma and her CAT scan shows the carbon monoxide has caused extensive brain damage. They have one trick up their sleeve: put her into the hospital’s hyperbaric oxygen chamber. In the chamber, Patty is given compressed, richer oxygen that is expected to regenerate the portions of her damaged brain. Hospital technicians explain that as the pressure in the chamber increases, more oxygen is able to get to Patty’s brain. Later, her doctor proclaims that Patty is out of her coma and is showing remarkable improvement. This is a true story that was documented by producers of cable television’s The Learning Channel, and aired as a segment of their show, “Trauma, Life in the ER.”

What’s chelation therapy?

Chelation therapy is administering a man-made amino acid called EDTA into the veins. (EDTA is an abbreviation for ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid. It’s marketed under several names, including Edetate, Disodium, Endrate, and Sodium Versenate.) EDTA is most often used in cases of heavy metal poisoning (lead or mercury). That’s because it can latch onto or bind these metals, creating a compound that can be excreted in the urine.

Besides binding heavy metals, EDTA also “”chelates”” (naturally seeks out and binds) calcium, one of the components of atherosclerotic plaque. In the early 1960s, this led to speculation that EDTA could remove calcium deposits from buildups in arteries. The idea was that once the calcium was removed by regular treatments of EDTA, the remaining elements in the plaque would break up and the plaque would clear away. The narrowed arteries would be restored to their former state.

Based upon this thinking, chelation therapy has been proposed to treat existing atherosclerosis and to prevent it from forming.

After carefully reviewing all the available scientific literature on this subject, the American Heart Association has concluded that the benefits claimed for this form of therapy aren’t scientifically proven. That’s why we don’t recommend this type of treatment.

Why does HBO therapy show promise in helping cerebral palsy patients? First, let’s confirm some previously mentioned facts. Cerebral palsy is the result of damage to motor areas in the brain. This in turn disrupts the brain’s ability to properly control the movement of the body’s muscles. The problem of CP lies in the brain, not the muscles. What causes this damage? A National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) study found that in most cases of CP, no direct cause for the damage could be found. In other words, cerebral palsy is a result of the brain not properly communicating with the muscles because the brain has been damaged for one reason or another.

Documentation now exists that clearly shows that HBO therapy can dramatically improve some CP symptoms. For example, a study in Brazil1 revealed a 50 percent reduction in spasticity of 94 percent (218 patients) of the patients involved in the study. Improvements have also been seen with vision, hearing, and speech. However, one should understand that improvement, if any, will vary from patient to patient. (Also see the CP section of our Patient’s Feedback page for one parent’s view of how HBO therapy at the Chico Hyperbaric Center positively affected her child.)

For more than 30 years, people with fatty buildups of plaque in their arteries (atherosclerosis) may have heard about a “”miracle cure”” called chelation (pronounced “”ke-LA’shun””) therapy. But you may not know that the American Heart Association and other medical and scientific groups have spoken out against this treatment.

This answers the most frequently asked questions about chelation therapy. It also gives the American Heart Association’s position on this procedure, as well as those of other highly regarded scientific organizations.

What’s atherosclerosis?

Atherosclerosis is also called “”hardening of the arteries.”” It occurs when the inner walls of the arteries become lined with deposits of fat, cholesterol and other substances, including calcium. This fatty buildup usually starts early in life and gradually gets worse over many years. That’s why middle-aged and older people are more likely to have the disease.

As plaque builds up, the arteries become hard and constricted. They lose their ability to expand and contract as blood flows through them and they get narrower. These changes make it harder for blood to flow through them, so the heart must work harder to pump blood throughout the body.

If this plaque ruptures or a blood clot blocks a narrowed artery, a heart attack, stroke or other serious medical problem can result. A heart attack happens when an artery bringing blood to the heart muscle is blocked. A stroke occurs when an artery to the brain is blocked

HBO therapy is a medical treatment that uses the administration of 100 percent oxygen at controlled pressure (greater than sea level) for a prescribed amount of time—usually 60 to 90 minutes. HBO therapy is commonly used to treat conditions such as burns and difficult healing wounds. HBO therapy facilitates healing in these conditions by increasing the amount of oxygen in the blood by up to 2000 percent, depending on the treatment depth. This in turn dramatically increases the amount of oxygen at the cellular level.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber

In the case of cerebral palsy in children, HBO therapy is administered at 1.5 ATA or equivalent to a depth of 16.5 feet below sea level. Some research has been completed using treatment depths up to 1.75 ATA, or 25 feet below sea level, with positive results. Each treatment lasts one hour and one or two treatments are prescribed each day, five or six days per week. The total number of treatments given in each case varies. It is common to administer 40 treatments in the first phase of treatment. The question of further HBO therapy is then resolved by the medical team involved in each case and is dependent upon a number of factors. However, many believe that if improvement is observed in the first phase of treatment, then a break of one to four weeks should be taken, followed by another 40 HBO treatments.

At the Chico Hyperbaric Center we use a multiplace chamber, which allows a parent to be in the chamber with their child during treatment. Also, no patient at the Chico Hyperbaric Center undergoes treatment without a health care professional in attendance during treatment.

What is chelation therapy?

Chelation therapy involves the use of chemical compounds injected into the blood stream , muscle or taken by mouth to bind metals that are present in toxic concentrations so they can be excreted (usually in urine) from the body.

What are legitimate uses for chelation therapy?

Chelation therapy is medically indicated when toxic levels of heavy metals such as iron, arsenic, lead, and mercury are present. While iron is a vital metal the other metals (arsenic, lead, and mercury) are not required by the body. Lead toxicity most commonly occurs with young children exposed to old houses with lead paint dust or chips. Occupational exposure (soldering, welders, smelters, battery reclamation) is also a risk. Lead screening for children has now become a standard part of a doctor’s visit for children in may states.

Mercury toxicity almost always occurs with high risk occupational exposures including dental workers, manufacturers of batteries/ thermometers, tannery work/taxidermy, and contaminated seafood. Arsenic poisoning usually occurs from exposure to insecticides, herbicides, rodent poisons, veterinary parasitic medications, or intentional poisoning.

Other heavy metals, mentioned only in passing because toxic exposure is extremely uncommon, include: cadmium, manganese, aluminum, cobalt, zinc, nickel, copper and magnesium. Heavy metal toxicity can cause a wide range of problems including severe injury to the body organs and the brain.

AUTISM BENEFITS WITH OXYGEN

Worldwide, medical researchers are discovering promising results with the effects of hyperbaric therapy on persons with Autism. In one study, involving brain functionality and recovery for children with chemical exposures exhibiting PDD disorders, hyperbaric oxygen therapy was found to be remarkably effective.

Treatments consisted of 10 sessions in a hyperbaric chamber at 1.3 ATA, for one hour per day, five consecutive days for two weeks. To increase validity to the study results, SPECT scans of each patient’s brain were taken before and after the hyperbaric treatments to quantify physical changes to the brain tissue.

The SPECT scan showed an increase to blood flow and oxygen to the temporal lobe. SPECT scans of patients taken before hyperbaric treatments showed a significant amount of dormant activity while scans taken of patient brains after hyperbaric indicated an increase in brain activity and blood flow. After hyperbaric therapy, dormant brain regions were replaced with greater functioning tissues and represented a scan more similar to a healthy individual.
