I did not know any of this until my research brought me here. I
found out, apparently, that there are quite a number of forms of
Inflammatory Bowel Disease. I initially thought that there were only
two types. But then, as I found out, I only knew of the two major
forms: Crohn's disease and Ulcerative colitis. The minor ones, seven
of them, I discovered, included Collagenous colitis, Lymphocytic
colitis, Ischaemic colitis, Diversion colitis, Behcet's syndrome,
Infective colitis, and Indeterminate colitis.
According to Wikipedia, Collagenous colitis is the form of
inflammatory colonic disease where its peak incidence occurs in the
5th decade of life and affects women more then men. This
form of inflammatory colonic disease involves water diarrhea,
usually in the absence of rectal bleeding.
Lymphocytic colitis on the other hand is subtype of microscopic
colitis. It is a very rare condition that is characterized by a
chronic non-bloody watery diarrhea. Lymphocytic colitis peak
incidence occurs in persons over age 50. Same as Collagenous
colitis, it affects women more than men.
Then Ischemic colitis differentiates itself from the others by
having an inflammation and injury of the large intestine that
results to inadequate blood supply. This type is very uncommon in
the general population but occurs mostly among the elderly. It is
the most common form of bowel disease.
As one of the major forms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Crohns'
disease is characterized by having the inflammation occurring at the
digestive system that may also affect the gastrointestinal tract
from anus to mouth. Because of this, the symptoms of Crohn's disease
vary from one person to another. But its main symptoms are abdominal
pain, diarrhea, weight loss and vomiting.
One of the new medications that can help treat Crohn's disease is
the treatment called Hyperbaric oxygen therapy. This type of
treatment is already U.S FDA approved and is very safe as it does
not involve surgery. The therapy only uses 100 percent pure oxygen
and treats patients by putting them inside a hyperbaric chamber
breathing in that 100 percent pure oxygen.
Though already used in hospitals and selected health centers, the
therapy can also be done right at home or an office. This is so
because hyperbaric chambers are already available for sale and for
rent. These hyperbaric chambers come in two sizes, the single bag
and the double bag. The single bag can be operated solo while the
double bag needs two people to be operated and fits two persons. It
would be good to point out that if a parent or a loved one wants to
accompany the patient during the session inside a hyperbaric
chamber, He or she can rightly do so even if he or she does not have
any known illnesses. This only shows that the therapy is very much
safe.
Well, that is about it with Inflammatory bowel diseases. Have an
incredible day everyone!
