A common problem that
affects the brain is called dementia or senility. Symptoms of this
illness include giving a person difficulty in remembering, learning
and communicating. As the illness progresses along the way it
become more hard for a person to take care of himself or herself.
Dementia has also been
known to change a patients mood and personality. First signs of this
happening would be is the loss of memory and trouble thinking
clearly .Then later disruptive behavior and other problems related
to it will being to appear.
Dementia is caused by
the demolition of brain cells. The more common cause to do this
would be a stroke, a brain tumor or Alzheimer's disease. Other
lesser known cause would be Wernicke-Kosakoff Syndrome, Lewy Body
disease and Pick's disease.
Alzheimer's disease is
the most common cause for dementia. Almost two-thirds of dementia
cases are traced to Alzheimer's disease. There are about 5.2 million
people in the United States who have Alzheimer's disease. It is the
sixth-leading cause of death. The cost of this disease has already
amounted to $148 billion each year from direct and indirect costs to
Medicare, Medicaid and businesses.
Wernicke-Korsaff
Syndrome is defined as a deficiency in thiamine or Vitamin B1. It is
usually caused by chronic and severe alcoholism. The syndrome can
also be caused by other factors such as eating disorders,
malnutrition and the effects of chemotherapy. The dementia that is
caused by this syndrome will show signs of apathy, confusion,
hallucinations, communication problems and severe memory
impairment.
Lewy Body disease is
described as deposits of the protein alpha-synuclein inside the
brain cells. These deposits would then bother the brain by impairing
perception, thinking and behavior. These deposits are called Lewy
bodies which is named after the first person who described them in
the 1900s, Friedrich H. Levy.
Pick's disease affects
the frontal and temporal sides of the brain and is considered to be
the most common of the frontotemporal dementias. It occurs most
commonly between the ages of 50 and 60 years old. The disease
involves dementias symptoms such as personality changes,
deterioration of scoail skills and lack of emotion and empathy.
As of now, dementia that
is brought about by Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease can
be treated by Hypebraric oxygen therapy. Other illnesses that
Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy treats are not dementia related like the
treating of wounds, multiple sclerosis and insomnia.
Hyperbaric oxygen
therapy uses hyperbaric chambers and pure oxygen to treat its
patients The therapy lasts less than hour, it is very safe since it
does not involve surgery and is U.S. FDA approved. Hyperbaric
chambers are available on selected health centers and hospitals, it
is also available for sale and for rent .
