Urinary tract infections are caused as a result of a bacterium, Escherichia coli or E. coli, which enters the urinary tract. Bacteria enter through the opening of the urethra and then move into the urinary tract. An infection in the lower urinary tract is known as cystitis and the infection in the urethra is known as urethritis. Urinary tract infections are a combination of both these conditions. Holding back urine for too long is amongst the main reasons for urinary tract infections since the bladder is stretched beyond its capacity and the muscles become weak. Therefore, the weakened bladder has more difficulty in emptying itself which eventually leads to infections.

Women are a lot more susceptible to urinary tract infections because they have a smaller urethra as compared to men and their urethral opening is closer to the vagina where the bacteria generally reside. Pregnancy also increases the risk of infection since the uterus puts a lot of pressure on the bladder. In men, an enlarged prostate, a bladder stone or a sexually transmitted disease such as gonorrhea are amongst the possible causes for urinary tract infections. Diabetes, intercourse, or menopause could also be some of the causes for urinary tract infections.
