http://www.balancedhealthtoday.com/Autism-and-Hyperbaric-Chamber-Testimonials.html Sessions typically last an hour and cost parents $100 to $200 per hour, often with discounts for multiple sessions. Usually, parents are told they need at least 20 sessions, often up to 100, to see results. One reason so many centers are cropping up — more than 500 nationwide — is that many mainstream hyperbaric doctors turn away patients with brain injuries.

“”We get calls from people who have cancer, people who have HIV, arthritis –all kinds of things,”" said Dr. Neil Hampson, director of the hyperbaric medicine program at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle and president of the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society. “”And we don’t treat those patients either without published, scientific evidence”" that it works. STUDY SHOWED BENEFITS

The largest and most cited research to date involved children with cerebral palsy in Canada. That study found no difference between the group treated with oxygen and the placebo group that received pressurized air to simulate the sensation.

Still, both groups did show some improvement, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy proponents say that proves that even providing ordinary air at high pressure can have beneficial effects. http://www.balancedhealthtoday.com/Hyperbaric-Oxygen-Chamber-Testimonials.html

Hyperbaric oxygen treatment combined with a blood-vessel widening drug (vasodilator) has been shown to improve visual function among individuals experiencing retinal artery occlusion. (European Journal Ophthalmology 3; 89-94, 1993) Hyperbaric oxygen treatment has been successfully used to improve vision among patients with retinal swelling (macular edema) and retinal vein occlusion. (Survey of Ophthalmology 39; 347-66, 1995)

Hyperbaric oxygen treatment has been administered successfully to patients with central retinal swelling (macular edema) resulting from retinal vein occlusion. Among 12 patients who were treated, 10 experienced visual improvement, with median visual acuity improving from 20/100 to 20/25. The hyperbaric oxygen treatment is believed to constrict retinal capillaries and thus decrease leakage of fluid that causes edema. (Ophthalmologica 210; 168-170, 1996)

Dogs exposed to 3 atmospheres of pressure at 100 percent oxygen developed retinal problems and a reduction in their electro-retinograms. Narrowing of the visual field and impairment of central vision has been recorded among humans undergoing hyperbaric oxygen treatment at 3 atmospheres of pressure for more than 4 hours. (Science 151; 466-68, 1966)
