Prostate Enlargement Symptoms

Is your prostate causing you concern? It’s hard to ignore the symptoms of a swelling prostate once they start to occur. With the saturation of the word “prostate cancer” ìn the media, ìt is unfortunately the first thìng that leaps to the minds of most men. However, cancer isn’t as common as the complications of the prostate caused by diabetes, high blood pressure and tumors of both the malignant and benign variety, whìch can cause prostate enlargement. Rarely ìs a prostate problem a silent issue and more often than not, by the time a man seeks help, the symptoms have often been goìng on for months.

One of the main ways most men realize they mìght be suffering from a prostate disease, are the small tell-tale signs that begin and then grow ìn the number of occurrences. Symptoms such as a frequent and urgent feeling that you need to urinate but once you get to the bathroom, you have difficulty starting a urine stream. Additionally, many sufferers of prostate problems report they have noticed a weak urine stream or the sensation that they stìll “have to go” even though they had just eliminated the bladder. Causes for greater concern can be leaking urine or noticing tinges of blood ìn the urine.

It’s not unusual for men, especially middle-aged and above to experience the occasional bout of prostate problems. However, any occurrence of an issue wìth the prostate wìth symptoms such as a weak urine stream, feeling an urgent need to urinate and the feeling your bladder isn’t emptying, should be discussed wìth your family doctor at the soonest possible opportunity. Many times, the prostate ìs swelling ìn reaction to a larger physical problem such as diabetes, benign and cancerous tumors or high blood pressure. As you know, the sooner you can start treatment for an illness, the better your quality of life can remain.

“Protecting Yourself
The best protection against prostate problems is to have regular medical checkups that include a careful prostate exam. See a doctor promptly if symptoms occur such as:
• a frequent urge to urinate,
• difficulty in urinating, or
• dribbling of urine.
Regular checkups are important even for men who have had surgery for BPH. BPH surgery does not protect against prostate cancer because only part of the prostate is removed. In all cases, the sooner a doctor finds a problem, the better the chances that treatment will work.

Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer among American men. About 80 percent of all cases occur in men over 65. For unknown reasons, prostate cancer is more common among African American men than white men.

In the early stages of prostate cancer, the disease stays in the prostate and is not life threatening. But without treatment, cancer can spread to other parts of the body and eventually cause death. Some 40,000 men die every year from prostate cancer that has spread.

Diagnosis. To find the cause of prostate symptoms, the doctor takes a careful medical history and performs a physical exam. The physical includes a digital rectal exam, in which the doctor feels the prostate through the rectum. Hard or lumpy areas may mean that cancer is present.

Some doctors also recommend a blood test for a substance called prostate specific antigen (PSA). PSA levels may be high in men who have prostate cancer or BPH. However, the test is not always accurate.

Researchers are studying changes in PSA levels over time to learn whether the test may someday be useful for early diagnosis of prostate cancer.

If a doctor suspects prostate cancer, he or she may recommend a biopsy. This is a simple surgical procedure in which a small piece of prostate tissue is removed with a needle and examined under a microscope. If the biopsy shows prostate cancer, other tests are done to determine the type of treatment needed.

“There are several different ways to treat BPH:

Watchful Waiting is often chosen by men who are not bothered by symptoms of BPH. They have no treatment but get regular checkups and wait to see whether or not the condition gets worse.

Alpha blockers are drugs that help relax muscles near the prostate and may relieve symptoms. Side effects can include headaches. Also, these medicines sometimes make people feel dizzy, lightheaded, or tired. Alpha blockers are new drugs, so doctors do not know their long term effects. Some common alpha blockers are doxazosin (Cardura), prazosin (Minipress), and terazosin (Hytrin).

Finasteride (Proscar) is a drug that inhibits the action of the male hormone testosterone. It can shrink the prostate. Side effects of finasteride include declining interest in sex, problems getting an erection, and problems with ejaculation. Again, because it is new, doctors do not know its long-term effects.

Prostate Cancer

Prostate Enlargement Symptoms

The prostate is a small organ about the size of a walnut. It lies below the bladder (where urine is stored) and surrounds the urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder). The prostate makes a fluid that becomes part of semen. Semen is the white fluid that contains sperm.

Prostate problems are common in men 50 and older. Most can be treated successfully without harming sexual function. A urologist (a specialist in diseases of the urinary system) is the kind of doctor most qualified to diagnose and treat many prostate problems.

Noncancerous Prostate Problems

Acute prostatitis is a bacterial infection of the prostate. It can occur in men at any age. Symptoms include fever, chills, and pain in the lower back and between the legs. This problem also can make it hard or painful to urinate. Doctors prescribe antibiotics for acute prostatitis and recommend that the patient drink more liquids. Treatment is usually successful.

Chronic prostatitis is a prostate infection that comes back again and again. The symptoms are similar to those of acute prostatitis except that there is usually no fever. Also, the symptoms are usually milder in chronic prostatitis. However, they can last a long time.

Chronic prostatitis is hard to treat. Antibiotics often work when the infection is caused by bacteria. But sometimes no disease causing bacteria can be found. In some cases, it helps to massage the prostate to release fluids. Warm baths also may bring relief. Chronic prostatitis clears up by itself in many cases.

Prostate Infection

THE PROSTATE

The prostate is a walnut-sized gland which forms part of the male reproductive system. It is located in front of the rectum and just below the bladder, and surrounds the urethra, thus affecting the normal flow of urine. Scientists are still researching the prostate’s complete function, however it is known that its main role is to squeeze fluid into the urethra as sperm move through it during sexual climax. This prostatic fluid, which forms part of the semen, provides energy for the sperm and reduces the acidity of the vaginal canal. The prostate is controlled by hormones. These hormones affect its growth, the way it works and ongoing health – they are important in maintaining a system of balance in the prostate.

Prostate Enlargement

An enlarged prostate is a non-cancerous condition in which the narrowing of the urethra makes the elimination of urine more difficult. It most often occurs in men over age 50. A non-cancerous condition that affects many men past 50 years of age, enlarged prostate makes eliminating urine more difficult by narrowing the urethra, a tube running from the bladder through the prostate gland. It can effectively be treated by surgery and, today, by certain drugs.

Causes & symptoms
When the enlarging prostate gland narrows the urethra, a man will have increasing trouble starting the urine stream. Because some urine remains behind in the bladder, he will have to urinate more often, perhaps two or three times at night (nocturia). The need to urinate can become very urgent and, in time, urine may dribble out to stain a man’s clothing–to his embarrassment. Other symptoms of BPH are a weak and sometimes a split stream, and general aching or pain in the perineum (the area between the scrotum and anus). Some men may have considerable enlargement of the prostate before even mild symptoms develop.

PROSTATITIS

This is the most-neglected male disease in the U.S. It strikes more men than either prostate cancer or prostate enlargement. It can be one of the most miserable diseases inflicted on men. It strikes them at younger ages.

It lasts longer. Urologists estimate that one in every four men who see a doctor about a problem involving the penis, urethra, testicles, prostate, bladder, or kidneys is suffering from one of three types of this disease. But prostatitis is not a threat to life, and for all practical purposes research of prostatitis does not exist.

Symptoms
These mimic the symptoms of prostate growth, such as: Frequent urge to urinate, Difficult start, dribbling, Nighttime trips to the bathroom . The symptom that sets prostatitis apart from prostate growth is pain. This varies from mild to so severe it renders a man helpless. Indeed, some people refer to a man in severe prostatitis pain as a “prostate cripple.”

BENIGN PROSTATIC HYPERPLASIA (BPH)
NON-CANCEROUS PROSTATE GROWTH

This condition is normally identified by its symptoms. The most common include:
1- Getting up nights to go to the bathroom
2- Sudden, almost irresistible need to urinate
3- A weak, start-stop stream
4- Problems getting the stream to start.

The prostate begins to enlarge in all men usually starting in their 40′s. Once growth starts, it does not stop as long as life goes on. Effects of this growth vary from almost unbearable misery to minor annoyance, and points in-between. The general rule is that one man in four over age 60 will become so aggravated by BPH he will need physical relief.

How can benign prostatic hypertrophy be diagnosed?

1. Digital Rectal Exam

In digital rectal exam, the physician is able to palpate whether or not a patient has an abnormally enlarged prostate

2. Prostate Specific antigen

The PSA level of a patient is measured through a blood smear and elevated amounts may mean the possibility of prostate cancer or benign prostatic hypertrophy. Definite diagnosis can only be done after a biopsy

3. Urine Flow Study

The urine flow study measures how quickly you can empty your bladder and increased results would mean a possibility of benign prostatic hypertrophy.

Prostate Enlargement Treatment

Prostate Infection

The enlargement of the prostate can be due to so many diagnoses but the most common reason for such is benign prostatic hypertrophy. Benign prostatic hypertrophy is a disease that goes as a man ages. In this disease, the cells in the prostate continue to grow to the point that it impedes the functioning of the organs near it such as the urinary bladder and the urethra.

What are the signs and symptoms of prostate enlargement?

1. Urinary incontinence
2. Urinary hesitancy or having a slow start in urination
3. Dysuria or painful urination
4. Hematuria or blood in the urine
5. Urinary urgency or a strong urge to urinate at once
6. Nocturia or frequent urination at night.

A few questions to ask yourself:

* How severe are your symptoms?
* Do symptoms prevent you from doing things you enjoy?
* Do they seriously affect your quality of life?
* Are they getting worse?
* Are you ready to accept some small risks to get rid of your symptoms?
* Do you know the risks associated with each treatment?
* Is it time to do something?

Deciding on Treatment for an Enlarged Prostate

A range of treatments can relieve enlarged prostate symptoms — medications, minimally-invasive office procedures, and surgery. The best one for you depends on your symptoms, how severe they are, and whether you have other medical conditions.

The size of your prostate gland, your age, and your overall health will also factor into treatment decisions. What’s best for a man in his 50s might not be optimal for an 80-year-old. An older man may want immediate symptom relief through drugs or surgery, whereas a younger man may lean toward a minimally invasive treatment. According to the American Urological Association, surgery often does the best job of relieving symptoms, but it also has more risks than other treatments.
