http://www.balancedhealthtoday.com/hyperbaric-chamber.html A Stroke damages the brain and many of the pathways or neural connections to the muscles have been destroyed or damaged and many will never return. Our brain may no longer recognize our body’s position in space let alone how to take control of it, however the brain has a great deal of plasticity and redundancy and it is possible to help restore some of the lost function by training other portions of the brain to take over. It is not an easy process and takes a great deal of time and dedication, however, it is possible to make improvement!

Stroke survivors are often told in traditional therapy, treatment or rehabilitation that “”anything you haven’t gotten back in the first 90 days you might never get back!”"

The stroke therapy offered at Ability Camp combines Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy to help stimulate the injured brain and an intensive and focused therapeutic exercise program called Conductive Education to help repair or form new connections from the brain to the muscles. With the combination of these two therapies we have been able to help people make improvements even 15 years after their stroke occurred.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which involves people breathing pure oxygen in a specially designed chamber, for the treatment of multiple sclerosis Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease of the nervous system which affects young and middle-aged adults. Repeated damage to parts of the nerves leads to progressive weakness and disability. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) involves people breathing pure oxygen in a specially designed chamber (such as used for deep sea divers suffering pressure problems after resurfacing).

HBOT is sometimes used for MS in case a lack of oxygen to the affected nerves may be making MS worse, but this theory is unproven. The review of nine trials found no consistent evidence that HOBT can improve disability or modify the progression of MS. There is little need for further research.

They are just proving that Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment ‘cures’ RSD (if that’s possible). It definitely reverses the damage and heals the blood cells. One of my friends went 18 times, and the RSD left her right foot and was almost completely gone in her left foot. Her pain was almost completely gone and bone scans showed the reversal. Unfortunately, she had to stop the treatments because Workers Comp would not fund it and the RSD eventually returned with a vengeance.

The treatments cost $200 a visit, so we can’t afford them on our own. I did inquire on the web about this treatment and at first I received negative stories. I received a phone call from a doctor in Canada, who was confident that these treatments totally reverse RSD when administered properly. I saw it working in my friend, but she wasn’t allowed to go long enough, and that’s why I believe it came back. I have not tried it personally. Cheryl – Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

We have discussed many times about the involvement of lack of oxygen in RSD, which is probably the reason why HBO appears to works so well. Sharon – Lincoln, UK

HYPERBARIC AND WOUND HEALING

Bed sores, lesions, pressure sores, chronic wounds, ulcers and abscesses are nasty looking, a real problem to deal with, and at times quite painful for their owner. Wound management is a traditional medical specialty unto itself. Integrative healing (CAM) modalities and techniques are now being researched in clinical trials to assist and amplify traditional care.

There are many reasons for non-healing wounds, some are the result of medical conditions. Many diabetics fear and eventually undergo surgical amputation. Bed ridden patients in nursing home or assisted living facilities develop bed sores that can facilitate their demise. Paraplegics and quadriplegics develop localized pressure sores that can instigate life-threatening infections. Situations that impede circulation such as complications following surgery, congestive heart failure, rheumatoid arthritis, peripheral ulcers, vascular disease, and traumatic injury help cause wounds.

Additionally edema, systemic problems and infection impair normal healing. Most wound programs combine traditional medical and surgical care in addition to advanced wound care technologies including but not limited to dressing materials of bioengineered tissue and hyperbaric medicine. Alternative and integrative medicine processes and treatments offer a different approach.

Autistic children showed significant symptom improvement following hyperbaric oxygen therapy in a sham-controlled trial, researchers here said.

Clinical Global Impression scores by investigators improved by 1.13 points in 30 children who received 40 one-hour sessions of hyperbaric therapy over a four-week period, compared with a 0.38-point improvement in 26 sham-treated children (P<0.001), reported Daniel A. Rossignol, M.D., of the International Child Development Resource Center, and colleagues online in BMC Pediatrics.

Smaller but still significant improvements were seen in the treated children compared with the control group in parental Clinical Global Impression scores (1.30 compared with 0.83 points, P<0.05), the researchers said.
Scores on the irritability subscale of the Aberrant Behavior Checklist — but not on four other subscales or the total score — also favored the treatment.

Performance Hyperbarics

The normal atmospheric condition we all experience on dry land is called normobaric pressure. When divers go under the surface, the pressure of the water and air above them increases with depth. This additional pressure causes several changes in the way a human body processes blood gases like oxygen and nitrogen.
If a diver surfaces too quickly, the gases in the blood can convert to bubbles and cause a very dangerous situation called the bends, or decompression sickness. A hyperbaric chamber, sometimes called a decompression chamber, can return a diver to the same depth and pressure experienced during the actual dive. This procedure in the hyperbaric chamber allows the nitrogen in the bubbles to escape naturally, leaving only absorbable oxygen.

A hyperbaric chamber’s usefulness is not limited to decompression sickness. Certain diseases, such as diabetes or anemia, do not allow blood cells to become supersaturated with oxygen at normal atmospheric pressure. By placing the patient in a hyperbaric chamber and administering pure oxygen, doctors can increase the amount of oxygen cells carried off through the bloodstream. Patients suffering from gas gangrene or flesh-eating bacterial infections can also benefit from the hyperbaric chamber’s increased atmospheric pressure.

In the United States, hyperbaric chamber treatments are recognized as safe and effective for a handful of medical conditions. European and Scandinavian countries have approved a wider use of the hyperbaric chamber, especially when used in conjunction with oxygen therapies.

Treatment in a commercial hyperbaric chamber can be fairly expensive, and some divers with compression sickness can require dozens of treatments. Medical professionals are still debating any other benefits derived from hyperbaric chamber treatments, including reduced effects of aging and improved mental stamina. There are companies worldwide which can provide private hyperbaric chamber models for home use.

“Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) has been used in medicine since the 17th century to treat many different ailments, conditions and injuries. It involves breathing 100% oxygen, while under pressure in a special chamber, a HBOT chamber.

The USA’s FDA have approved the use of HBOT for many medical conditions, including:-

* Air embolism
* Decompression sickness
* Non-healing wounds
* Carbon monoxide poisoning
* Radiation burns
* Crush injuries
* Necrotizing tissue
* Blood loss and anaemia
* Intracranial Abscess
* Diabetic foot ulcer
* Thermal burns
* Osteomyellitis
* Compromised skin grafts

This FDA approval mean that HBOT is recognised for its efficacy and its power to heal. But what about autism?

Although HBOT has not yet been approved by the FDA for treating autism, this simply means that there is not yet enough evidence to show that HBOT works. However, many parents all over the world have seen miraculous results in their children after a program of HBOT – see the Shannon Kenitz video on this lens.

“The study, which was published in BMC Pediatrics, involved 62 children being treated at six sites around the United States. According to the BBC, “30% in the treatment group were rated by doctors as ‘very much improved’ or ‘much improved’ compared with 8% of those in the control group.”

The children received 24 percent oxygen at a pressure slightly higher than normal. Children with cerebral palsy and fetal alcohol syndrome have also shown benefits after hyperbaric chamber treatment, according to the BBC. The idea of using increased atmospheric pressure to help patients dates back to the 1600s, when a man named Henshaw built a sealed chamber where he could change the pressure with a series of bellows, according to Quackwatch.

The general public became familiar with hyperbaric chambers in 1986, when photos were released of singer Michael Jackson, then at the height of his popularity, laying down in one of the chambers. News reports claimed that Jackson planned to sleep in a hyperbaric chamber in the hope that it would enable him to live to age 150. Jackson later denied these reports.

The University of Southern California has a hyperbaric chamber on California’s Catalina Island. It is staffed at all hours, every day of the year to treat diving accidents such as air embolisms or decompression sickness. The site has a video that shows the chamber in action.

When in the hyperbaric chamber, people may breathe 100 percent oxygen; outside, oxygen makes up only 21 percent of the air in the atmosphere. The pressure helps the body dissolve the oxygen, according to WCCO television in Minneapolis, which in 2006 explained how hyperbaric chambers work.

The director of hyperbaric medicine at Hennepin County Medical Center told the station that when people have inhaled smoke after a fire, carbon monoxide in their blood poses a danger. The chamber, she said, gets rid of the carbon monoxide while giving the body oxygen.

In its long history, hyperbaric medicine has been used for many maladies. A recent Times of London article, for example, explained that Russian clinics have been using chambers to help alcoholics detoxify for more than a decade. This month, doctors at a Scottish clinic are scheduled to start a study “to establish whether stem cells are mobilised by HBOT and if there is a corresponding improvement in liver function,” the paper said.
