Lymphatic Drainage Massage

Lymphatic Detoxification

Each session can last between 30 minutes and two hours depending on whether the massage is focused on a specific area or the entire body, but your initial consultation will determine the number and frequency of future sessions.

Is it for me?
Forget hair of the dog, lymphatic drainage massage is where it’s at. Rather than putting yourself through 24 hours of hangover hell, by boosting lymphatic flow this treatment helps swill out all the toxins consumed the night before, leaving you ready to rock and roll all over again.

It also has positive external effects, and we all know how important it is to look as perky as you feel. By increasing lymphatic flow, water retention can be reduced and circulation improved which means puffy eyes, problem skin and cellulite can all be combated.

Unlike other massages, pregnant woman aren’t banned from the benefits of this treatment as it can help alleviate the pain and discomfort caused by swollen ankles as a result of transporting a baby bump around for 9 months. Women who are cursed with problem periods and PMS can also reap the rewards although it’s not advised to book in during the time of the month.

As with most massage treatments, relaxation and muscle relief can be expected, but lymphatic drainage massage is said to be especially good for sickly souls who suffer regularly from common illnesses like colds and flu because of its effect on the immune system. It has also been advised that people with low energy or who have dysfunctional respiratory systems try out the treatment as it can facilitate general feelings of health and vitality.

Although the treatment helps build up immunity, people suffering with cancer, diabetes, thyroid or kidney problems, asthma or epilepsy should seek medical advice before treatment.

Lymphatic Detoxification

Keeping your lymphatic system in proper working order is vital to maintaining good health. It interacts with every organ in your body and serves to protect it against infection. The lymphatic system is composed of a network of lymph vessels through which a fluid called lymph flows. Lymph is composed of plasma and other excess fluids from various parts of your body. Once the lymph enters the lymph system, it is filtered through the lymph nodes which are connected by the lymph vessels. Lymph nodes are filters that remove impurities, as well as potentially harmful bacteria in order to prevent them from entering your bloodstream.

The lymph nodes produce lymphocytes, a special type of white blood cell created in the bone marrow as well as in other organs in the lymph system such as the spleen, tonsils and the thymus gland. There are two types of lymphocytes which act in different ways to destroy impurities and infections. The T-cell lymphocyte releases different types of T-cells in order to destroy antigens such as bacteria and toxins, while the B-cell lymphocyte differentiates into plasma cells in response to infection, which secrete antibodies to eliminate it. When lymph nodes are responding to infection they may become swollen and tender.

When the lymphatic system is not working properly, the flow of lymph through the body is impaired, causing the buildup of toxins and a range of health problems. For example, toxic build-up can cause skin problems such as acne, eczema, wrinkled and aged-looking skin, sensitive skin, cellulite (the orange peel effect), which are bumps, fluid and fat just under the skin. In addition, chronically blocked lymph nodes can result in medical conditions such as allergies, chronic sinusitis, chronic fatigue, arthritis, balance problems and cancer.

Here are some measures you can take to strengthen your lymphatic system:

1. Have a regular exercise program. Lymph is circulated using the movement of your muscles and being physically active can help the fluid move more smoothly throughout the lymph vessels. In addition, you can practice yoga breathing exercises since the movement of the diaphragm also helps the movement of the lymph while deep breathing also increases the amount of oxygen in your blood.

2. Massage. A massage targeting the lymph system can also help improve its functioning. You can try aromatherapy massage to cleanse your lymph system and promote the flow of lymph, or give yourself a self-massage while in the shower or tub. Start with your feet and then gradually move up to your chest using a circular massage movement, then massage your arms moving up to your shoulder. Massage a second time following the same routine while toweling off.

The Role Of The Lymphatic And Digestive Systems
The lymphatic system and immunity
The lymphatic system is an incredibly important, yet largely ignored, system within our bodies. It has a vital role to play in:
• maintaining fluid balance in the body
• absorbing fat from the digestive tract
• acting like a garbage collection service, filtering the bloodstream of toxins and waste
• combatting infection – lymph nodes contain large amounts of white blood cells that overwhelm bacteria.

Here are a handful of amazing facts you most likely didn’t know about the lymphatic system:
1. It is made up of lymph, lymphocytes, lymph vessels, lymph nodes, the tonsils, the thymus gland, Peyer’s patches of the intestines and the spleen.
2. We have approximately three times the amount of lymph fluid in our bodies than we do blood.
3. Blood is pumped around our body by the heart’s contractions. In contrast, lymphatic fluid generally flows around the body against gravity. Three things help to keep it moving: the contractions of surrounding muscles during exercise or activity (this can increase lymph flow by up to 15 times); contractions of smooth muscle in the lymph vessel walls; and movements of the chest when breathing.
4. The most critical part of the immune system is in the gut – 70 per cent of all antibody-producing cells are found in Gut Associated Lymphoid Tissue (GALT), found in the intestine. GALT is thought to be the largest set of immune cells in the body.

Therefore, just by stepping up your level of activity and taking deep breaths, you will be cleansing your immune system!

The digestive system
The digestive tract is the group of organs in the body through which food and liquids pass when they are consumed, digested and eliminated. These organs include the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines, rectum and anus.

In comparison to the lymphatic system, the digestive system usually gets more attention – but not necessarily without due cause. Nutritional medicine places a lot of emphasis on the proper operation of the digestive system in terms of its impact on our overall health and well-being.

This is logical, as obviously our bodies rely upon the food we eat and the liquids we drink for nutrients. Likewise, we rely upon the digestive tract to expel toxins from our bodies, which would otherwise be detrimental if allowed to remain. Moreover, the health of our lymphatic system is greatly affected by the state of our intestines, as is the liver and our immune system.

The digestive system is one of the most important systems of our body and its normal functioning is paramount to our survival. We take all our nutrition and energy from the digestive system, and its inefficiency can lead to lethargy and nutrient deficiency.

Lesson learned
What the above teaches us, is that it is critical that we do all that we can to protect our lymphatic and digestive systems and ensure that they are operating optimally. The day-to-day stresses that are placed on these systems by the modern diet, work pressures, family strains, lack of exercise and environmental toxins all lead to an incredible burden on both the digestive and lymphatic systems on a daily basis.

A regular exercise regime and a healthy eating regimen can go a long way to reducing this burden. However, sometimes our bodies need a little bit of extra help. Dietary supplementation can offer your body support, specifically at times of unusual strain.

The lymphatic system is an important part of the immune system. It contains organs, lymph nodes, ducts and vessels that manufacture and deliver lymph from body tissues into the bloodstream. The adenoids and tonsils, spleen and thymus are also part of the lymphatic system.
Lymph is clear fluid that moves through the arteries. It is made up of white blood cells which target bacteria, and chyle which is a fluid containing fats and proteins. Chyle is found in the intestines.
The circulation of lymph through body tissue cleanses the tissue, draining after this process through the lymphatic system’s lymphatic channels and nodes.

Lymph nodes are small organs shaped like beans, and are located in the center of the chest, the abdomen, the armpits, the neck and groin. These nodes are filters which trap and remove toxins including bacteria, viruses and cancer cells. Lymph nodes swell when they produce more white blood cells to remove toxins.

Lymph nodes from under the arm may be removed when a woman has invasive breast cancer. These nodes are examined for cancer cells.
If cancer cells are found, this is called lymph node involvement. Lymph node involvement is a significant indicator of higher risk that the cancer will spread.

The lymphatic system protects the body from infection. Unfortunately cancer cells from many types of cancers including breast cancer, also travel the lymphatic system in their attacks upon body organs.
To add insult to injury, cancer cells use the lymphatic system to attack lymph nodes as well. This spread of cancer to organs is called metastasis.

Research from Saint Louis University has uncovered a possible way to inhibit the flow of cells and fluid out of tissues into lymphatic vessels. The hope is that this data will facilitate the prevention of the spread of cancers, including breast cancer.

Marigold
Also known as calendula, marigold helps cleanse the lymphatic system in a number of different ways, including helping reduce inflammation, strengthening the immune system and relieving fungal infections. Its anti-inflammatory action can be used to reduce inflamed lymph nodes. Its immune support helps keep the lymph nodes consistently filtering and flushing toxins from the system. Its properties as a cholagogue, increasing bile flow, and a depurative, purifying the blood, also help move detoxifying lymph through sluggish lymph glands.

Poke Root
Poke root is beneficial for all the glands, although it is used most often in support of the lymphatic system, particularly in cases of swollen lymph nodes. It is most effective on the lymph nodes of the throat, and is frequently indicated in cases of adenitis, mumps and strep throat. When symptoms of lymphatic toxicity include swollen glands, poke root can be of particular benefit. A powerful anti-catarrhal as well, it can also be used to remove mucous buildup in the membranes of the nose and throat. Poke root is often used in combination with cleavers and blue flag, an alterative and diuretic that performs its detoxifying functions by acting on the liver, the primary organ for detoxification in the body.

Lymph Nodes

The lymphatic system and blood is involved collecting, transporting, and removing toxic materials from the body specifically the connective tissues. The lymphatic system contains lymph nodes where the toxins are delivered for the immune system to use and destroy invading organisms and chemicals. If the lymphatic system and blood is not cleansed properly, the immune system can be impaired, which leaves the body open to attach from invading organisms.

Lymph nodes are filled with a clear liquid called lymph. This fluid is comprised of proteins, waste, and other nutrients to feed cells and remove waste. This fluid surrounds every cell in the body and travels in the lymphatic vessels and or blood vessels and is vital for elimination of waste material. Lucky for us there are herbs that can be used to help cleanse both the lymphatic and blood system.

Red clover has been used for years as a lymphatic and blood cleanser. Traditionally, red clover has been used as a liver, nerve, and lung detox as well. Many herbalists recommend red clover when doing a whole body cleanse. Cleansing the blood is important because the blood transports oxygen and nutrients to the vital organs and tissue of the body.

Red Root has also been traditionally used as a cleansing herb by herbalists. This herb can stimulate lymph function and aid in the transport of waste material from the lymph to the liver. Red root has also shown to boost the liver and its vital functions.

Echinacea is another herb research has discovered to be an effective lymphatic and blood purifier. Echinacea extracts can boost the production of interferon and has interferon properties which help fight vital infections. Echinacea is also known to equalize white blood cell count and boost the activity of leukocytes (white blood cells) helping the body fight and destroy toxic invaders in the body. It has shown to boost red blood cell count which helps the body detox and it has antiseptic properties which help cleanse and reduce pain in the body from injury.

Yellow dock is considered a blood purifier by herbalists. Yellow dock can also aid in boosting skin health and can be useful with leprosy, psoriasis, and cancer of the skin. Yellow dock is recommended by herbalists if a person is experiencing anemia, liver problems, skin problems, toxemia, infections, lymph congestion, ulcers, or have wounds that need healing. Some say yellow dock is the best blood builder in the herbal kingdom.

If toxins and wastes begin to build up in the tissues because the kidneys and the liver cannot cope with their job, then sooner or later disease will follow. Such is the responsibility to keep a healthy and well functioning skin.

We do need to wash, perhaps even more than we realised. But does that ritual with the soap and water actually do the job? Of course it’s still fun to jump into the tub, but once you start to skin brush, you won’t need to use all that harmful soap. Skin brushing itself, will make a lot of difference to the quality of your skin.

The skin-brushing itself – dry of course, not in the bath – will change the health of your whole body. Circulation, skin softness and quality, skin infections and irritations, whole body freshness, your level of stimulation, the prevention of colds, and you personal rejuvenation are all areas of improvement you can look for, when you make it to a regular habit.

To brush the skin: Start at the soles of the feet and work your way up your legs, your front and your back, brushing as vigorously as you feel able. Then do your hands and up your arms. Focus the brush strokes, when doing your chest and upper back, towards your heart. Don’t do your face, but give the back of your neck and your scalp a good go. For hygiene reasons you need a separate brush for each member of the family, and of course, you need to wash the brush itself every couple of weeks.

“The first step in cleansing the lymphatic system is to cleanse the colon so that the excess mucoid material backed up in the lymphatic system can be drained up.
The second step in cleansing the lymphatic system is to practice skin brushing. This is a highly effective technique for stimulating the expulsion of fresh mucoid material, hardened particulate or impacted mucoid matter, and other obstructions of the lymphatic system and for correcting inflammations of the lymph nodes. Like the colon, the lymphatic system can contain stagnant accumulations of old waste matter.

If the skin becomes inactive with its pores chocked with millions of dead cells, then impurities will remain in the body. The other eliminative organs, mainly the kidneys and liver, will have to increase their labour and will eventually become overworked.

Lymphatic System

Lymphatic Cleansing

Lymphatic Detoxification

Lymphatic cleansing is essential for good health, because the human lymphatic system plays a key role in the wellbeing of the body. It forms a core part of the body’s immune system, and is also responsible for bringing nutrients to as well as wastes away from cells.

Diet and Nutrition

Food that we consume can sometimes help in the smooth flow and functioning of the lymph or hamper the flow of lymph in the human body. In order to cleanse the lymph system, one should avoid food that contain chemicals, artificial flavoring agents, artificial colors, preservatives, and stabilizing agents; these are found in processed food to increase shelf life. The more one consumes food that is not fresh, the more one will congest or block the lymphatic fluid from flowing freely in the human lymphatic system.

It is also advisable to stay away from food that is not easy to digest, and this includes food containing too much fat, animal protein, sugars and carbohydrates. Food that is sweet to taste and is white, food produced using white flour, such as white bread, white pasta, and white rice consume a lot of energy to digest, energy which could have helped clean up the lymphatic system. These food items also wreak havoc with one’s blood sugar levels.

As you can see, lymphatic cleansing is not just about what we can do, but also about what we should not do, or, in this case, what we should not eat.

In addition to the above, one must try and drink up to 2 liters of water everyday. If possible, one could drink warm water, for this can help dissolve certain stubborn waste products accumulated across various body parts. Indeed, drinking a lot of water is probably the most basic form of bodily and lymphatic detox.

Besides one’s diet and nutrition, there are several other lymphatic cleansing and detoxification methods.

Exercise

This is the best form of detoxification as far as the lymphatic system is concerned. The lymphatic system is responsible for fighting infections and it is important to keep the lymphatic system healthy at all times. Exercise helps keep the movement of lymphatic fluid at its maximum and ensures a lot of toxins are flushed out by sweating. Exercise also improves blood circulation, strengthens the heart and oxygenates cells. Exercise is indeed the best and most natural form of lymphatic cleansing.

Herbs

Astragalus, echinacea, goldenseal, pokeroot, wild indigo root, burdock, and red clover are excellent herbs that will help cleanse the lymphatic system and flush out toxins accumulated in the lymph. All herbal products should be taken in conjunction with an organic food diet or food which is free of any and all chemical products and substances. Another important point to note is to continue to exercise while using such lymphatic detox herbs, in order to reap the maximum benefits.

Lymphatic Cleansing Stimulation

Given that we do not understand these fine points well enough to be certain, it would seem appropriate that patients who have not yet had surgery try to move as much lymph through the body as possible to see if the swelling subsides. For those who feel they are at risk for cancer, periodic lymphatic stimulation and/or drainage may be a healthy preventative measure. Once, however, the nodes are gone, it is more uphill. One very simple but probably only minimally helpful exercise is to hold the affected (swollen) area upwards to see if gravity will permit some of the lymph to descend into areas that still have adequate drainage.

What very few patients seem to realize is that the immune system does not fight cancer so long as there is infection in the body. Isn’t this one of Nature’s ironies? People are more afraid of cancer than infection, but the body tries to eliminate infection before turning its resources towards cancer control. The lymphatic system in many people is overwhelmed by infection, often stemming from dental problems, as well as toxic substances (mercury, aluminum, chemicals from antiperspirants, dry cleaning, and so forth.) Lending a hand to the lymphatic system will usually relieve some of the pressure on other parts of the body.
