We found the most helpful solutions for my son were to make minor adjustments in the house and his environment, but most importantly to change his diet to build up the right nutritional stores to help him improve his immune system to cope better with his environment as it existed.

For example, we found that if my son had a hot dog at lunch with nitrites, and then was exposed to car and bus fumes coming home from school, he would get sick from the exhaust fumes. However, when he stopped eating cafeteria food and started taking his lunch with nutrient (especially magnesium) rich foods without preservatives, then the car fumes from the line of cars in the passenger loading zones at his school would not bother him.

I suspect that the nitrite and other chemicals in the cafeteria lunches were using up some of his store of minerals and vitamins used to detoxify both nitrites and car fumes. So by not expending his nutrient stores to detoxify the preservatives from the cafeteria lunches at school, he then was better able to cope with other toxic substances he was exposed to such as car fumes.

The specific diet treatment tips we found helpful were:

* We kept a food diary to see which foods made him feel better or worse. Trigger foods seemed to be:

o Hot dogs, bacon, lunch meat anything with nitrites. I also kept from giving him too many foods with naturally occurring nitrites, though based on his diet diary these didn’t seem to be a problem. But I didn’t want to take any chances.

I always buy nitrite free meats at home, but initially I didn’t think the limited exposure to nitrites my son got from school lunches and occasional restaurant meals would be significant. Was I ever wrong on that front. Cutting out the cafeteria lunches and nitrite cured food at restaurants made a significant improvement in my son’s health.

o Birthday cake – we think it was the dye in the frostings that made him sick. The preservatives and high levels of sugar probably didn’t help either.

o For some reason chocolate doughnuts really made him worse.

* My son seemed to have the least problems with MCS when his pH was within a normal range.

* I made most meals from scratch when possible. I bought a rotisserie to cook up organic meat ahead of time for him to take in his lunch to avoid the nitrites in processed lunch meat. I also bought a rice cooker to make up big batches of organic rice.

* I started making my son’s lunch each day, packing it with whole, preservative and dye free foods from home instead of letting him eat at school. It is ironic that school lunches often consists of high fat, high sugar, nutrient poor processed foods laden with preservatives, considering the number of links that have been established between poor diet and behavior problems at school. One of the frequent meals at my son’s school is corn dogs, a food loaded with fat, salt and nitrites.

“The very last part of the colon, before reaching the rectum, is in an “”S”" shape and called the sigmoid colon. By the time stool gets to this part of the colon, most nutrients have been absorbed back into the bloodstream. Because the stool contains products of putrefaction at this point, there exists a special circulatory system between the sigmoid colon and the liver. There is a direct communication of veins called the enterohepatic circulation. Have you ever felt sick just before having a bowel movement, when stool material has just moved into the rectum for elimination? As soon as the material is evacuated, you no longer feel sick. This is due of the toxic quality of the material and the enterohepatic circulation coming into play. Because of this, it is important to evacuate when you have the urge. The rectum should usually be empty.

This circulatory system enables toxin to be sent directly to the liver for detoxification, rather than circulating them through the rest of the body and all of its vital organs including the brain. This system of veins carries rectal / sigmoid toxins directly to the liver for detoxification.

When a coffee enema is used, the caffeine from the coffee is preferentially absorbed into this system and goes directly to the liver where it becomes a very strong detoxicant. It causes the liver to produce more bile (which contains processed toxins) and moves bile out toward the small intestine for elimination. This seems to free up the liver to process more incoming toxic materials that have accumulated in the organs, tissues and bloodstream. The coffee does not go into the systemic circulation, unless the enema procedure is done improperly.
