This is not something to be rocking about. Heavy metals are defined as chemical elements that have a specific gravity of at least 5 times that of water. Well known metallic elements are arsenic, cadmium, iron, lead and mercury. Heavy metals when taken in small quantity are beneficial for a healthy life. These beneficial heavy metals are referred to as trace elements. Trace elements are found in foodstuff, fruits, vegetables and multivitamins.

Then here come the scary part. These heavy metals can also harm people and they are called toxic heavy metals. Toxic heavy metals will become harmful to our bodies when they are not metabolized and accumulated in the soft tissues. These heavy metals will attack us by finding their way through our food, water and air. They can also come in contact through the skin in settings such as agriculture, manufacturing, pharmaceutical, industrial and residential set ups.

Among the 35 metals of concern, there are 23 we can call heavy metals. Toxicity can come from any of them. The most common come from arsenic, lead, mercury, cadmium, iron and aluminum. To remove heavy metal toxicity from our bodies, there are two types of therapy. One of them is chelation therapy.

Chelation therapy is a chemical process that involves a lot of ares in treating heavy metal toxicity. It can be for medical treatment, environmental site rehabilitation, water purification and many more. Chelation therapy is effective in treating arsenic, lead, mercury, iron and aluminum toxicity. One of the first chelating agents to be used was EDTA and is known to be very effective for lead poisoning.

Remember, heavy metals in small quantity are okay. Taking it in large quantities can kill us. Heavy metals they can be good for us, they can also be bad. Have a nice day!
