Dementia or sometimes
called senility is a group of symptoms which are caused by disorders
that affect the brain and is not known to be a specific disease.
People who will be affected by dementia will have different symptoms
such as not being able to think properly enough to do normal
activities like eating or getting dress. Symptoms also include
losing control of emotions, losing the ability to solve problems,
personality change, becoming easily agitated and hallucinations.
Though it is widely
known that Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause for dementia
that it is almost two-thirds of dementia cases are because of it.
But other than Alzheimer's disease there are also less known causes
for dementia. Here are some of them.
This type of dementia
may be known to you as it is also called mad cow disease but it is
formally known as Creutzfeldt-Jakon disease or CJD. This disease is
caused by slow viruses named prions. Prions are folded proteins that
hamper in the brain's ability to function. CJD affects adults
between 40 and 60 years old and is known to be 5% and 15% to have a
genetic link. But it can also can happen anytime with even no
genetic link because the disease is transmitted through infected
medical equipment.
Another famous cause for
dementia is HIV/AIDS. HIV/AIDS can cause damage to the bodies
tissue and structures of the brain thus resulting into dementia. The
usual symptoms of this dementia include slowness, forgetfulness and
struggling with concentration and problem solving. Other symptoms
would include apathy, hallucinations and delusions. HIV/AIDS
affects all ages, so dementia brought about by HIV/AIDS occurs in
children as well as adults.
From one famous cause to
another we now jump to Parkinson's disease. Parkinson's disease is a
neurological condition that affects movement by creating tremors,
rigidity and other problems that involve balance and motor skills.
Dementia symptoms of the disease are depression, retrieving memory
and hardships in executive functioning.
A way of treating
dementia such as Alzheimer's disease and migraine's Parkinson's
disease is the modern alternative medication called Hyperbaric
oxygen therapy. The medication is U.S. FDA approved and is also
used to treat other illnesses such as ADD/ADHD, insomnia, head
injuries and Crohn's disease. Though it has been proven to treat
Alzheimer's disease it also can be helpful in alleviating dementia
but not its causes.
The therapy does its
work by using oxygen and a hyperbaric chamber. The patients sits or
sleeps inside a hyperbaric chamber while breathing in pressurized
oxygen for less than an hour. If patients patients don't want to
sleep, they can read books or watch movies inside a hyperbaric
chamber.
Well it has been fun
talking about dementia. Hope this article has been useful.
