All You Ever Need To Know About Estrogen

Estrogen Functions
Estrogen Replacement Therapy

Estrogen a popular and widely known primary sex hormone found in women is so named because they are responsible for the development of the estrous cycle in females immediately after puberty. What we know about estrogen is that it derives its name from two words—‘oistros’, a Greek word meaning sexual desire and gen meaning “producer of’. From various references what is already known about estrogen is that it is a chemical compound synonymous to the development of sexual characteristics in female. That does not necessarily mean that it is found exclusively in women. In fact it is also produced in males though the reason for the same is yet unknown. Hope this answers the most asked question—can men have estrogen?

Estrogen occurs naturally as steroids. One good quality about estrogen is its ability to diffuse readily across the cell membrane. Once inside the cell it works by activating the estrogen receptors which is in turn responsible for the regulation of many genes. The presence of estrogen both in invertebrates as well as insects shows that it also played an important role in the history of evolution.

3 Types of Estrogen as Present in Human Body:

What we know about estrogen is that it basically occurs in three natural types-- estrone (E1) whose predominance comes into play during menopause, estradiol (E2) which is the predominant type of estrogen during the reproductive years of a woman, and estriol (E3) which realizes its utility during pregnancy. A short mention has to be made about estetrol (E4) which is another type of estrogen produced only during pregnancy.

Estradiol is the strongest type of estrogen found in the female body with potency equal to 80 times that of estriol. Even though the amount of estriol produced within the female body is very high, it is considered to be the weakest of all three types of estrogen. It is well known about estrogen that all the three different types of estrogen found in the female body are primarily made from androgens like testosterone and androstenedione, with the help of the enzyme aromatase.

Functions of Estrogen:

This hormone has is involved in almost every aspect of development of female sexual characteristics. It is well known about estrogen that it primarily helps in the development of the secondary sexual characteristic like development of breasts and is also actively involved in preparing the body for a regulated menstrual cycle.

They also help in the thickening of the endometrium which is a glandular tissue responsible for making the female uterus conducive to the reception of the embryo and also helps in the further development of the fetus.

That it also has a significant role to play in the changes effected in the mental health of women is pretty well known about estrogen. Sudden lowering of estrogen levels in women has been seen to result in depression and sometimes also to the development of OCD or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Restoring the balance of estrogen generally results in the upliftment of a woman’s mood.

Other functions such as increase in the body metabolism increase in uterine growth and vaginal lubrication, reduction of bone resorption and muscle mass, protein synthesis, ovulation, sexual receptivity and desire etc are also associated with estrogen.

Regulation of Estrogen Hormonal Imbalance:

Hormonal imbalance has a very negative effect on the reproductive system of a woman leading to outer manifestations in the form of depressions and sudden mood changes. This is primarily due to the mismatch in the levels of estrogen and progesterone produced in a female body. This is a well known point we know about estrogen.

While leading a balanced life and having a healthy lifestyle can help reduce this hormonal imbalance to a great extent, there are also herbal, homeopathic and other remedies available to bring back the balance in the levels of estrogen to what we know about estrogen.

One very effective herbal remedy to counter the negative effects as we now about estrogen is Endosterol. Consisting of the best quality of beta sitosterol available along with pumpkin skin extract, saw palmetto, quercetin, gingko biloba and ellagic acid, Endosterol has a very positive effect on female disorders. Breast cancer estrogen may also be removed by using Endosterol to detoxify and cleanse the human body.

Endosterol with its strong plant sterol concentrates obtained from the berries of the saw palmetto plant is also an excellent remedy for hormonal imbalance the causes of which are deeply associated to what we know about estrogen. The presence of this saw palmetto oil extract makes Endosterol a hormonal supplement par excellence for women—one which should be regularly taken to experience and reap its benefits. Enhancing all the good qualities that we know about estrogen, Endosterol comes highly recommended by everyone who has used it.
