IBD or Inflammatory Bowel Disease is a group of inflammatory
conditions that involve the large intestine and small intestine. IBD
has two major forms they are Crohn's disease and Ulcerative
colitis. While the minor forms are Collagenous colitis, Lymphocytic
colitis, Ischaemic colitis, Diversion colitis, Behcet's syndrome,
Infective colitis and Indeterminate colitis. Being the two major
forms of the disease we shall only talk in detail about these two,
Crohn's disease and Ulcerative Colitis.
Crohn's disease is one of the major forms of IBD and primarily
causes ulcerations in the large and small intestines. It is also
known to affect the digestive system anywhere from the mouth to the
anus. Though the disease is also called terminal ileitis, ileitis,
regional enteritis and granulomatous enteritis or colitis, it is
more famously called Crohn's disease which is named after the
physician who described it in 1932, Burrill Bernard Crohn.
It is estimated that Crohn's disease affects 400,000 and 600,000 in
North America and 27- 48 per 100,000 in Northern Europe. Males and
females are both at risk to be affected by the disease while
smokers are three times more likely to develop it. The disease can
occur at any age but present itself initially during the teens and
twenties period. Then it again strikes with another peak incidence
in the fifties to seventies. Looks like Crohns' disease is another
reason why people should not be smoking.
A way of treating Crohns' disease that has been newly developed is
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy was first used
to treat divers in the early days for their decompression sicknesses
but now it is used to treat ADD/ADHD, Alzheimer's disease, head
injuries, insomnia and of course Crohn's disease. The therapy is
very safe because it does not involve surgery and is U.S FDA
approved. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy uses only 100% pure oxygen that
is being breathed in by patients in a sealed hyperbaric chamber.
These hyperbaric chambers are not only found t health centers or
hospitals they can also be found at personal homes and offices. It
is because that these chambers can be bought or rent thus making it
very accessible.
Then with Ulcerative colitis, it affects the colon or large
intestine. Its symptoms such as abdominal pain, rectal bleeding and
diarrhea are caused by the ulcers and inflammation of the inner
lining of the colon. The major difference with Ulcerative colitis
and Crohn's disease is that Crohn's disease affects any part of the
gastrointestinal tract which is from the mouth to the anus while
Ulcerative colitis only is restricted to affecting the colon and
rectum. In microscopical terms, Crohn's disease affects the whole
bowel wall and Ulcerative colitis affects only the mucosa or the
epithelial lining of the gut.
